CAPTURING THE USE OF COLLOCATION IN ARGUMENTATIVE ESSAY WRITING ON SECOND SEMESTER STUDENTS IN ENGLISH EDUCATION DEPARTMENT OF IAIN SURAKARTA

Collocation is a combination of words in a language that happens very
often and more frequently than would happen by chance. The aim of this study is
to analyze the types of collocation used by 2nd
semester students and the incorrect
collocation made by the students in their argumentative essay writing. The
researcher used content analysis with descriptive qualitative approach. The data
was collected by documenting the types and incorrect collocation on the studentsâ
worksheet of argumentative essay writing. The data were analyzes by reducing the
data, presenting the data, analyzing the data by using Benson theory and taking
the conclusion and verification.
This research used source triangulation and verification based on Oxford
Collocation Dictionary to get an appropriate data. There are two findings of this
research. First, the types of collocation used by the students. Second, the incorrect
collocation made by the students. The result of the study showed that there are 9
types pattern consist of lexical and grammatical collocation. The total of
collocation used by the students in their argumentative essay are 127 collocation,
it also showed that most of collocation produced by the students is lexical
collocation there are 74 collocation, while grammatical collocation are accounted
58 collocation. Adjective + Noun is the pattern of lexical collocation types which
commonly occurred in students argumentative essay.
The second finding is the incorrect collocations made by the students there
are: 1) quality character, 2) social domain, 3) far distance, 4) attractive dressed, 5)
important energy, 6) we must pause, 7) to understand the problem, 8) the
likelihood of blindness, 9) donât wear, 10) education ladder, 11) pretty easy, 12)
rectify our mindset, 13) quality generation, 14) observe intently, 15) the goal of
doing homework, 16) to managed, 17) tremendous pain and 18) virtual world.
From those findings, there are many types of collocation used by 2nd
semester
students and the incorrect collocation is still low. Based on those findings, the
researcher has suggestion for other researcher to investigate the relationship
between studentâs collocation competence and their academic success. It will be
of great value to understand whether collocation knowledge helps students
increase their academic achievement
A STUDY OF STUDENTSâ ANXIETY IN SPEAKINGPERFORMANCE AT THE SECOND SEMESTER OF ENGLISH EDUCATION DEPARTMENT OF IAIN SURAKARTA

The objectives of this research are (1) to know the types of anxiety faced by students in speaking class, (2) to find out the factors of anxiety and strategies to reduce anxiety of the students in speaking class, (3) to know the levels of studentsâ anxiety in speaking class.
This research was a descriptive qualitative research. The subjects of this research are 34 students of the second semester students of English Education Department of IAIN Surakarta. The data collected from the observation, questionnaire, and interview. The data which have been collected are analyzed by using the theory of types of anxiety, the theory of source anxiety and coping strategies anxiety, and also the levels of anxiety suggested by Horwitzâs theory.
The result of the research are (1) the students of the second semester had some types of anxiety, they are 7 students who had state anxiety, 5 students who had trait anxiety, and 22 students who had situation specific anxiety. The most types of anxiety in the second semester students are the situation specific anxiety. (2)The researcher also found some factors of anxiety, they are lack ofpreparation, learnersâ belief about language learning, personal and interpersonal factors, and fear of making mistakes. The most factors of speaking anxiety in the second semester students are the lack of preparation. Besides that, the researcher also found some strategies to reduce the studentsâ anxiety, they are preparation, relaxation, positive thinking, peer seeking, and resignation. The most strategies used by students in the second semester students are preparation. (3)Then, the researcher also found the levels of students anxiety, they are: 5 students (14,7%) who had very high anxiety, 14 students (41,2%) who had high anxiety, 11 students (32,3%) who had low anxiety, and 4 students (11,8%) who had very low anxiety. It means that most of students had level of anxiety in high level among another level that found in this research. Finally, the researcher has the suggestion for the lecturer and the students of English Education Department to have a good method to improve studentsâ speaking ability especially in speaking performance to decrease anxiety.The teacher should plan the material it well, for example when speaking in front of class the teacher give themes spontaneously to the students. So, the students try to study hard and make a good idea about the themes. It is also can make the students more active in speaking because they had more idea to speak. It is also for other researcher who interested in conducting similar study as a reference to support their study
DIGGING PROBLEM FACED IN LEARNING ENGLISH BY VISUAL IMPAIRED STUDENTS IN INCLUSION CLASS AT X IPS 4 MAN KLATEN IN THE ACADEMIC YEAR 2016/2017

The objectives of the research are (1) to know the process in learning English by visual impaired students in inclusion class at X IPS 4 MAN Klaten in the academic year 2016/2017; (2) to Know the problems faced in learning English by visual impaired students in inclusion class at X IPS 4 MAN Klaten in the academic year 2016/2017; (3) to discover the problems faced in learning English by visual impaired students in inclusion class at X IPS 4 MAN Klaten in the academic year 2016/2017.
To conduct the research, the researcher used the descriptive qualitative research. The researcher conducted the research from January until June 2017 in the inclusion class at X IPS 4 MAN Klaten. The researcher collected the data from observation, interview and documentation. The researcher did three steps to analyze the data such as; reduction the data, display the data and verification or drawing conclusion. To prove the trustworthiness of the data, the researcher used the triangulation especially methodological triangulation.
The result of the research shows that; (1) The process in learning English by visual impaired students in inclusion class are (a) Teacher center, so the students are learning English depend on the teacherâs instruction (b) The English material for visual impaired students same with normal students, (c) Visual impaired student used screen reader laptop as a media in English learning process. (2) The problem faced in learning English by visual impaired students in inclusion class are (a) lack of vocabulary, they are misunderstanding meaning of two words which have similar meaning (b) visual impaired students didnât get additional teacher who is special in handling visual impaired students, (c) visual impaired students got similar attitude with normal students because their teacherâs perception about inclusion class, (d) two of visual impaired students got trouble with their motivation to learn English, subject 1 only got 44 % and subject 2 got 56% in motivationâs scale (3) The solving of the problem faced in learning English by visual impaired students are (a) visual impaired students increase their own motivation to learn English, (b) the school has accommodated adaptive computer equipment, readers for exams, recorded English lesson and laboratory assistants

The objectives of the research are: (1) to describe how is the teaching process of
English subject for the nursing students in AKPER Mambaâul Ulum Surakarta in the
academic year 2016/2017, and (2) to describe the materials of teaching English for the
nursing students in AKPER Mambaâul Ulum Surakarta in the academic year 2016/2017.
This research was conducted January 2017 until July 2017 for the second semester of
nursing studentsâ in AKPER Mambaâul Ulum Surakarta. It was descriptive qualitative
research. The subject of this research was the teacher and student in 1B class. The data were
collected from interview, observation, and documentation.It means that in checking the data
validation of a problem, the researcher has to compare some methods of collecting data
(interview, observation, and documentation) to get a conclusion as the result of this research.
This result showed the teaching process and material selection in English for Specific
Purpose (ESP) class. The implementing of ESP course is already good enough by comparing
the result of observation and theories of teacher role, the characteristicof ESP course and ESP
material. Beside, this research also explained the assessment and method of ESP class.
Although the lecturer are not getting special training before they teach a ESP students, The
result of analysis explained that the ESP teaching process which conduct by the teacher
already appropriate with the ESP theories
A CONTENT ANALYSIS ON SPEAKING MODULE OF BILINGUAL FACULTY OF ISLAMIC EDUCATION AND TEACHER TRAINING FACULTY IN IAIN SURAKARTA

Module is an alternative teaching media which is in the form of autodidact learning and design systematically to help students in learning activity (Mulyassa as cited in Nugroho, 2014:16). Bilingual Faculty is a program in Islamic Education and Teacher Training Faculty of IAIN Surakarta where students in this faculty hopefully be able to speak more than one foreign language. The aim of this study is to know how the quality of materials of Guided Speaking used for 4th semester and Public Speaking used for 6th semester teaching materials that released in the first implementation of Bilingual Faculty of Islamic Education and Teacher Training Faculty (FITK) in IAIN Surakarta in the academic year of 2015/2016 based on criteria of materials evaluation proposed by Jocelyn Howard.
The researcher used content analysis with descriptive qualitative approach. The data was collected by documenting the content materials on the module. The data were analyzed by reducing the data, presenting the data, analyzing the data by using Howard theory and taking the conclusion and verification. This research used theoretical triangulation to get an appropriate data in order that the result of the study is credibility, transferability, dependability and confirm-ability.
There are four findings of this research. First, Guided Speaking and Pubic Speaking modules are not categorized as a module. Second, looking at the quality of materials, the result showed that Guided Speaking module fulfilled the criteria proposed in Howard theory concerning the materials evaluation with the summative score 24% and Public Speaking module fulfilled the criteria proposed in Howard theory concerning the materials evaluation with the summative score 25%. Third, there is a consistency of poor teaching materials in each lesson in both modules. Fourth, the materials in Guided Speaking module used for 4th semester is more difficult than Public Speaking module used for 6th semester. From those findings, the modules were categorized as a poor teaching materials and not suitable to use as media in teaching and learning process in Bilingual Faculty of Islamic Education and Teacher Training Faculty (FITK) in IAIN Surakarta. Based on those findings, the researcher has suggestion for Bilingual Department Team and forthcoming researcher to evaluate the quality of standardized materials based on experts
